Courage

Two Travelers and a Bear: What is a True Friend? (E TWO) Aesop and his troupe of animal actors teach their audience to be wary of trusting those who abandon them in times of trouble. (Grades K-3)

Inspirational


The Art of Miss Chew (E POL) Trishia tells the story of Mr. Donovan, who gave her extra time on her tests so she could pass, and her amazing art teacher, Miss Chew, who taught her how to see negative space and to sketch everything around her. (Grades 2-6)

The Junkyard Wonders (E POL) Trishia tells the story of the year she was in the class called "The Junkyard." They learn that they are all full of possibility, each and everyone of them. (Grades 2-6)

Mr. Lincoln's Way (E POL) Mr. Lincoln helps "Mean Gene" learn to treat others well when they work hard on an atrium together to attract beautiful birds to the school. (Grades 2-6)

Testing the Ice (E ROB) Sharon Robinson tells the story of her dad, Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color barrier, and who tested the ice for her and her friends, even though he couldn't swim. (All grades)

Thank you, Mr. Falker (E POL) Trisha is made fun of terribly at school because she can't read. Her teacher Mr. Falker promises to help her, and he does. (Grades 2-6)

Kindness & Empathy


The Brand New Kid (E COU) by Katie Couric. Lazlo is the new kid at school, and everyone thinks he's a little weird. One girl has the courage and kindness to befriend him when no one else will. (Grades K-3)

Extra Yarn (E BAR) Annabelle brings happiness to her town by knitting them colorful sweaters and refuses to sell the box to an evil archduke who wants it for his own greedy desires. (All grades)

The Fox and the Crane: How Should You Treat Others? (E FOX) Aesop and his troupe of animal actors teach their audience how others should be treated. (K-3)

The Invisible Boy (E LUD) by Trudy Ludwig. Brian is invisible at school; the teacher focuses on kids who need more attention, and the other kids just ignore him. When Justin arrives, however, he makes friends with Brian and helps other kids see how great he is, too. (Grades K-6)

The Lion and the Bird (E DUB) Lion finds an injured bird and wraps her wing. They form an unlikely friendship during the winter and he hopes for her return the next fall. (Grades K-3)

Mouse and Lion (E BUR) An illustrated version of the Aesop tale in which the kind act of a mouse saves a lion in need. (Grades K-4)

Respecting Others Despite Differences


A Bad Case of Stripes (E SHA) Camilla Cream is too afraid of being different and made fun of to let others know she likes lima beans. This could spark a conversation about respecting differences and being ourselves. (Grades All grades)

Howard B. Wigglebottom Listens to His Heart (E BIN) Howard loves to dance, but the kids make fun of him. He decides to stop dancing forever and find something else to do, but he's not good at anything. He has to learn to listen to his heart to do what he loves. (K-3)

The Other Side (E WOO) Although a fence separates the whites and Blacks in town, two girls become friends when they join each other atop the fence. (All Grades)

The Rough-Face Girl (398.2 MAR) Two beautiful sisters claim to have seen the invisible being because they want to marry him, but their lies do not match the truthfulness and inner beauty of the Rough-Face Girl who has truly seen him. (Grades 3-6)

The Sneetches (E SEU) The Star-Belly Sneetches believe they are better than the Plain Belly Sneetches and treat them badly. It's not until Sylvester McMonkey McBean shows up with his fancy machine that the Sneetches learn neither Star-Belly nor Plain Belly Sneetches are better than the other. (All grades)

Wings (E MYE) Ikarus Jackson is different. He has wings. All the other kids make fun of him but one girl stands up for him. This could inspire someone to be the one who makes a difference! (Grades 2-6)
